7 Feb 2021, Mark 10:21 ESV
And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.”
Mark 10:21 ESV
Mark provides an important detail to this dialogue between Jesus and the rich young man. When Jesus confronts the young man about the one thing that is hindering his faith journey, we are told that Jesus loved him.
In today’s cancel culture, exposing someone’s blind spot is tantamount to being judgmental. Yet, if spoken in love with compassion and gentle correction, a timely word provides the opportunity for change—for healing and growth. Still, the other person may walk away from the relationship (as did the rich young man), but the story is not over. Our work may be done, but Christ will complete his work in us (Philippians 1:6).
Father God grant us courage to speak the truth with compassion and humility, and grant us faith to persevere when others walk away—knowing that your work will be completed in each of us. Amen.
