“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 5:3
This being the first beatitude raises the questions of its importance. Is it foundational to developing the other blessings? If we understand “poor in spirit” to imply a sense of unworthiness, then this first beatitude calls us to a deeper understanding of God’s grace. In other words, we can only inherit the kingdom of heaven if we understand that we are morally and spiritually impoverished and unworthy to be in God’s presence. Yet, because of the Father and Son’s unconditional love for us, we are forgiven and restored. We are refreshed in the spirit with the assurance that the Son has prepared a place for us in his heavenly kingdom (John 14:1-2).
Thank you, Father, for giving us your Son, who is our means of inheriting a place in your heavenly kingdom. Amen.
