He said, “But I will be with you, and this shall be the sign for you, that I have sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain.” Exodus 3:12
Not the kind of sign that I would seek to confirm that God has sent me. How about a burning bush, or perhaps divide the waters of a sea on my outward-bound journey. Nope, the sign will be that you return to where this all began and serve me.
It’s interesting that when Jesus’ called out to Peter to follow him, it began by the Sea of Galilee. And three years later when Peter was questioning his calling, Jesus’ reinstated his mission to “serve his sheep” by the Sea of Galilee (John 21:15-19).
Two takeaways for me: our calling will entail serving God through the care of others and will have a memorable marker—maybe not a locale, but certainly an unforgettable starting point that we may revisit from time to time.
