“But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened.” Luke 24:21
Expectations—they tend to lead us to misunderstandings and can create conflicts with others. They also expose our hearts’ desires. Most of Jesus’ disciples were looking for a strong and powerful messianic king (in the likeness of David) who would redeem Israel from all its oppressors. Jesus was an emancipator, but not by worldly standards. His mission was to set God’s people free from sin and its death sentence. Mission accomplished!
In many subtle ways, we place expectations on how God should act in our lives. When his will does not align with our way of thinking, we would do well to consider who is the Creator and who are the creatures, and then patiently watch and see how God accomplishes his greater purposes.
Father God, help us to give to you our hearts’ desires and to have great expectations of how you are accomplishing what is best for all your children. Amen
