We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God and take every thought captive to obey Christ… 2 Corinthians 10:5
How important is it to take our thoughts captive? The recent news about Ravi Zacharias is a cautionary example. Ravi was masterful at destroying arguments opposed to Christ and the Christian worldview. His knowledge of Scripture and his apologetic style of communicating were superior to the vast majority of us. Yet, there was one area of his thought life that was untethered and out of control. His lustful thoughts mastered him and guided his actions.
None of us are immune to destructive thought patterns. Without the grace of God renewing our consciences through the provocations of the Holy Spirit and the community of believers, we would all stumble. So how do we cooperate with the Holy Spirit and take our thoughts captive? By fostering a love for God that deepens our understanding of his grace. Love leads us toward Christ; shame leads us toward self.
