Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6
A dear friend who had provided godly counsel to Ruth and me leading up to our marriage offered us her Cadillac for our honeymoon. Her car had a customized license plate that read: PROV3 5-6 (her life memory passage). For the next two weeks, Ruth and I drove through beautiful countryside and visited historic towns, and all the while our car promoted a reference to one of the best-known verses of our wisdom literature.
For Ruth and me, it placed an indelible mark on our minds of how to stay on course (following straight paths) as husband and wife. The problem is that in our fallen world we would rather lean on our own understanding. We would rather decide for ourselves what is right and wrong. And it all started in the Garden of Eden when Adam and Eve ate from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. Thankfully, the One who is “good” has defeated the evil one. And when we acknowledge our Lord, when we trust and obey him, his Spirit will make our paths straight.
