You were running well. Who hindered you from obeying the truth? This persuasion is not from him who calls you. Galatians 5:7-8
The problem? Detractors from the Gospel. The solution? Keep in step with the Spirit (verse 25).
Paul uses the imagery of “running” and “walking” often in his letters to address our spiritual growth. In this chapter, he expresses both with regard to how the Galatians were flagging in their spiritual journeys due to the added weight of adhering to the Mosaic law. He reminds them that obedience to the law will sever them from Christ and that in Christ only “faith working through love” counts (verses 4-6).
So how do we avoid those who would distract us from walking by faith and grace in the Spirit? It’s nearly impossible. They are both inside and outside the church. But we can safeguard our minds from their toxic legalistic thinking when we keep in step with the Spirit’s guidance. Through Scripture, prayer, and the encouragement of fellow sojourners who are also walking by the Spirit, he will mature our faith as expressed in godly love.
