Bondservants, obey your earthly masters with fear and trembling, with a sincere heart, as you would Christ, not by the way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, rendering service with a good will as to the Lord and not to man… Ephesians 6:5-7 ESV
Applying the concept of a bondservant to our position under the authority of others, Paul’s exhortation speaks to how we should conduct ourselves in the workplace. The temptation is to ingratiate ourselves to our superiors. After all, they possess the power to promote, demote, or fire us—but this limited view leaves God out of the picture.
In contrast, when we keep our focus on God’s sovereign supervision and seek his approval over that of our employers, then we place ourselves in the best position to press through toxic work environments trusting that God will promote or relocate us in due time. Meanwhile, our calling is to serve others with sincerity, as we would Christ.
