The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps. Proverbs 16:9
Planning is important. Solomon was a master planner concerning expanding and strengthening the nation of Israel, but one important lesson he learned through the twists and turns of life was that God alone guides our steps. James echoes a similar sentiment in his letter to the church when he cautions his readers to state their plans from the perspective of “if the Lord wills” (James 4:15). For this reason, in the Anglican Church, we cite announcements preceded by the words, “God willing.” This may seem pedantic, but it serves as a sobering and comforting reminder that our God is sovereign, that his purposes will be fulfilled in our lives. Meanwhile, he grants us the privilege to dream about and plan for our future knowing that his guidance is for our welfare and will strengthen our hope in him (Jeremiah 29:11).
Father, grant us wisdom when planning our ways and grace to embrace your outcome. Amen.
