The spirit of man is the lamp of the Lord, searching all his innermost parts. Proverbs 20:27 ESV
“Spirit” as cited above is the same Hebrew word translated as “breath” in Genesis 2:7 (the LORD God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life). As such, breath, spirit, and life are inter-relational: life cannot exist without breath, and the Spirit of God gives breath to spiritual life (John 3:6).
So what is Solomon saying regarding the human spirit being a “lamp of the Lord” that “searches the innermost parts”? He implies that God awakens our consciences to how we may please and glorify him (lamp of the Lord) and reveals our self-deceptions that impede progress (searching our innermost parts). This is accomplished through the sanctificating work of the Holy Spirit who breathes spirit into us (John 3:5-6) and intercedes for us (Romans 8:27).
Thank you, Father, for the gift our your Holy Spirit who is our breath of life and our means of sanctification. Amen.
