Scripture: And to which of the angels has he ever said, “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet”? Are they not all ministering spirits sent out to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation? Hebrews 1:13-14 ESV
Observation: The author of Hebrews outlines a pecking order in these first two chapters. At the top (as no surprise) is Christ. But implicitly the elect is next, given that angels attend to those who are to inherit salvation. Specifically, they minister to the needs of the saints whether it be sustenance (1 Kings 19:5-7) or protection (Psalm 91:11-12). And they even mediate for the youngest of the elect before the face of the Father (Matthew 18:10). Lastly, angels will gather the faithful at Christ’s return (Mark 13:27).
Takeaway: The next verse provides our answer: “Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it” (verse 2:1). Salvation is secure for those who have been called by God to follow Christ (John 10:29). But we can drift from the truth and incur much sorrow and grief. Thankfully, the Son will complete his work in us (Philippians 1:6) with the aid of ministering angels and the Holy Spirit. Our part is to pay close attention to the Gospel as it applies to every aspect of our lives.
Prayer: Father God, help us to stay focused on the Gospel and avoid the agony of drifting from a life of grace. Amen.
