Scripture: For not in my bow do I trust, nor can my sword save me. But you have saved us from our foes and have put to shame those who hate us. Psalm 44:6-7 ESV
Observation: Here, David addresses physical protection: do not put your trust in your might, in your weapons of defense. But the underlying principle is much broader to all elements of life. In many subtle ways, we unwittingly misplace our sense of security in God-given advances in medicine and technology. Whether it be a COVID vaccination or retirement investments, when we pursue these helpful means of health and prosperity with all of our energy and ingenuity as if it all depends on us, the fruit of our labor will eventually lead us to feelings of discontent or anxiety. History proves that we can never build a big enough defense against the forces of nature and our sin-marred humanity.
Takeaway: What’s the balance? Prayerfully utilize what God has given us (David did not set down his bow) with our sights set on eternity. No need for weapons in heaven.
Prayer: Father God, please help us to balance our trust in your protection while utilizing your gifts to humankind to promote a safe and healthy life. Amen.
