Scripture: For it is witnessed of him, “You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek.” Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them. Hebrews 7:17, 25
Observation: Drawing on David’s prophetic words regarding a forthcoming Lord and high priest in the order of Melchizedek who will reign forever (Pslam 110:1-4) and corroborating with Paul’s doctrine of Christ’s heavenly (intercession for the saints, Romans 8:34), the author of Hebrews reasons with his audience that Jesus comes from superior linage, the line of Judah (verse 14), and hence has become a superior high priest—not by the law of Moses, but by the power of an “indestructible life” (verse 16).
Takeaway: So what does that mean for you and me? First, we can rely on the cohesiveness and integrity of Scripture. Secondly, we can boldly approach his throne of grace and receive mercy and grace (Hebrews 4:16) because he intercedes from his heavenly throne on our behalf. Thirdly, we can be assured of our resurrection because he has exercised the power of an indestructible life.
Prayer: Thank you, Father, for the gift of your Son, who is the first fruits of the indestructible resurrected life. Help us to draw near to him in prayer with confidence that he continues to pour out his grace and mercy on us and save us from the destructive power of sin. Amen.
