Scripture: In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Isaiah 6:1 ESV
Observation: King Uzziah was one of the good kings (for the most part) amidst a succession of evil rulers in Judah. The young prophet Isaiah would have faired well under the latter part of Uzziah’s 52-year reign. As such, Isaiah would have likely struggled with the loss of his king. Yet, during this season of grieving, the King of kings would reveal himself to Isaiah in a vision. But this was not just a comforting experience. Isaiah would also sense his unworthiness in the company of the Holy One and confess his and the nation’s state of depravity (verse 5). In response, a seraph (angel) retrieves a lump of coal from God’s holy altar and touches it against Isaiah’s lips to cleanse him of sin (verses 6-7), foreshadowing Christ’s ministry to all of God’s children. Lastly, Isaiah is commissioned to go and prophesy among his fellow Jews (verse 9).
Takeaway: When we are grieving or despairing over our present circumstances, we will sense his loving and caring presence if our hearts are turned toward God (if we behold him). But he is more than a benevolent Father. He is the Holy One who created the universe. So when we seek his comfort, we also need to confess our sins and then listen and wait, for he may have a new mission in mind for us. (On a personal note, it was during one of the lowest points in my life that I discerned God’s calling to transition from my appraisal and consulting practice to ordained ministry.)
Prayer: Father God, we behold your glory and confess our unworthiness. Cleanse us from all unrighteousness and guide us in your ways. Amen.
