Scripture: But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 1 Peter 2:9 ESV
Observation: Here, Peter presents a succinct description of our identity in Christ. We were chosen and adopted into his royal family. This is good news for all of us, but particularly for those who wearisomely attempt to prove their worth. In the church, we talk a lot about “making a decision” for Christ. It’s understandable, given that we do consciously seek God’s forgiveness and ask Jesus to be Lord over our lives. But this is in response to the Holy Spirit wooing us through the spoken and written Word. And because our Lord first loved us (1 John 4:19), no one and nothing can snatch us out of his hands (John 10:28-39). Though we may stumble in darkness from time to time, he will restore us into his marvelous light. Why? Because we are his prized “possession” and “a royal priesthood” of our King of kings.
Takeaway: “Proclaim his excellencies.” Go and tell the world about our marvelous Lord and Savior. As chosen members of his royal family, we are called to press into the darkness and shine the marvelous light of the King of Glory.
Prayer: Thank you, Father, for choosing us to be your heirs. Please help us to resist striving for your approval and instead rely on your grace to shine the light of your Son into a darkened and lost world. Amen.
