Scripture: Oh sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth! Sing to the LORD, bless his name; tell of his salvation from day to day. Psalm 96:1-2 ESV
Observation: While the authorship of this psalm is uncertain, portions appear in a song of David (1 Chronicles 16) performed when the Ark of the Covenant entered Jersusalem. With a “new song” in his heart, David unabashedly danced with joy alongside the Ark’s procession. For Israel’s king delighted in the Lord’s strong arm of salvation that had united the people and had delivered them from their enemies. In John’s revelation, we hear an echo of David’s appeal. The twenty-four elders will fall before the Lamb and sing “a new song” to the Son of God: that he is worthy to open the scroll because he has ransomed God’s people from every nation by the shedding of his blood (Revelation 5:8-10).
Takeaway: All who know and love Jesus have a new song in their hearts. While it may feel intimate and personal, we will deprive others of discovering the joy of our salvation if we keep it to ourselves. Like David, we need to share with other the marvelous works that the Father and Son have done in our lives. And the first step is to practice singing to the One who has made it all possible.
Prayer: Father God, please help us to “sing to the Lord a new song… tell us his salvation from day to day!”
