Scripture: “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.” Matthew 7:13-14 ESV
Observation: In this last segment of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, he warns his followers that the path of loving obedience is arduous but the only way to eternal life with him. Jesus then outlines two roadblocks: false teachers (verse 15-19) and a works-oriented form of Christianity devoid of a personal relationship with him (verses 21-23). But he also graciously provides us with a roadmap to his heavenly kingdom: follow the Golden Rule; love and care for others as you would like them to do for you (verse 12). Easier said than done? Yep!
Takeaway: So, how do we stay on course? Ask and seek the blessings of the Father. Ask for good gifts to help you faithfully remain on course, and he will faithfully provide (verses 7-11). Ask him for wisdom to discern godly fruit from counterfeit (verse 16), and his Spirit will reveal the truth. Ask him to build your life on a solid foundation that will survive life’s storms (verses 24-25), and his Spirit will teach you obedience to his Word. But it’s all about grace. We ask, and he fosters a love in us for him that inspires us to obey him. It’s not an easy path, but it’s worth it!
Prayer: Father God, thank you for revealing to us your “Way, Truth, and Life” (John 14:6). For the sake of your Son, please help us to ask for the right gifts to help us stay on course on this heaven-bound journey, that we might grow closer to you and your Son each step of the way. Amen.
