Scripture: “So you also, when you have done all that you were commanded, say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty.’” Luke 17:10 ESV
Observation: Some of Jesus’ teachings seem rather harsh. Above is one example. Nevertheless, as always, the Son of God speaks and embodies the truth. He did not seek the gratitude of his Father (or anyone else’s for that matter). The Father initiated his praise of his Son when he thundered, “This is my Son in whom I am well pleased.”
Takeaway: We, Christ’s disciples, would do well to follow his godly example. Taking on an attitude of humble servitude will spare us the pitfalls of an entitlement attitude. When others are ungrateful, we will fare better if we remember our Brother’s teaching. And, when we most need to hear words of encouragement, the Holy Spirit will speak to our hearts or through others and say, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
Prayer: Father God, please work in us the mindset of humble servitude, that we might rise above entitlement attitudes or self-pity and learn to be content in simply doing our duty. Amen.
