Now therefore, Tattenai, governor of the province Beyond the River, Shethar-bozenai, and your associates the governors who are in the province Beyond the River, keep away. Let the work on this house of God alone. Let the governor of the Jews and the elders of the Jews rebuild this house of God on its site. Ezra 6:6-7
Having worked with students for the past decade, I see many who are biblically illiterate and who lean on their own understanding of morality. Consequently, they exercise freedom in revising Christian doctrine. Most are not willing to dialogue about what Scripture says pertaining to controversial topics. Instead, they push back with dismissive remarks that follow popular opinion.
Like in Ezra’s day, the church needs to be reconstructed—but not by those who have capitulated to secular ideology or selfish ambition. We need laborers who courageously stand on the foundation of Christ and speak words of truth with grace.
Father God, help us to be worthy laborers who lean not on our own understanding (Proverbs 3:5) but instead build your house on the Rock of Scripture (Matthew 7:24-25). Amen.
