I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me. Philippians 4:12-13
What is Paul’s secrete for contentment in all circumstances? Confidence in his Lord’s provisions—whether sufficient or in abundance, whether regarding wealth, health, or companionship. Indeed, there are direct correlations between contentment and confidence and between confidence and its source. If we place our confidence in our abilities or that of others, we will eventually be disappointed in the outcome, but if we place our confidence in the one who has demonstrated unfailing, sacrificial love for us, then no circumstance can derail us—whether it be persistent afflictions (1 Corinthians 12:7-10) or isolation (Ephesians 6:20).
Father God, help us to place our confidence in the Source of our provisions that we might rely on his strength that is made perfect in our weaknesses and thus learn contentment. Amen.
