For the Lord is righteous; he loves righteous deeds; the upright shall behold his face (Psalm 11:7 ESV). Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God (Matthew 5:8 ESV).
One thousand years separated David from Jesus, but these two anointed kings shared many of the same truths about their Father and his kingdom. In the above two verses, we see the parallel of righteous living. While David focused on the outward signs of godly deeds, Jesus addressed the unseen character of our hearts.
Both knew that those who seek to please God and follow in his ways will see/behold him. But what does it mean to see God in this life? We will see elements of his presence in his creation order, in those we serve, and in our heartfelt worship of him. While we cannot physically see our heavenly Father, his Holy Spirit sharpens our spiritual vision of him as we grow in our love for and obedience to him.
Father God, purify our hearts that we might behold you in our wake and our sleep. Amen.
